94%+ of the UK able to get ADSL
According to BT, 95% of UK homes and businesses are connected to a Broadband enabled exchanges.
There are some moans about it in the article, but that’s a pretty decent figure really, in the last year or so, a very large number of people in this country have been broadband enabled, while BT seemingly went ahead with widespread exchange upgrades, fairly seperate from the trigger numbers.
We may not have the 75% of people actually using Broadband that South Korea does, but things are moving that way as UK ISP’s seem to be pushing people towards ADSL quite heavily.
Take AOL, I think the biggest ISP in the UK. Their flat rate dial up is now £15.99/month (previously £9.99 I thought), while the minimum ADSL package (now a more reasonable 512k, rather than 256k) is £17.99/month with free activation and modem.
Wanadoo (formely Freeserve) are in a similar situation, Dial up being £14.99, while the lowest ADSL package is again £17.99, again free connection and modem, but this time a 1mbps connection (with a transfer cap).
I’m guessing the dial up prices are being at least partly forced by BT, but with prices like that, in another year or so, we should see quite higher numbers of people using ADSL.
