Win XP Cleartype
If you’re using Windows XP and never heard of Cleartype, run through these simple steps to check you’ve got it turned on.
Go to your desktop (press d while holding the Windows key down)
Right click on the desktop, and select properties
Go to the appearance tab and click the “Effects…” button
Make sure “Use the following method to smoot edges of screen fonts” is ticked
Make sure “Cleartype” is in the drop down box associated with the above tick box
If it is, great stuff, if not, amke it so, and click apply and OK. Then spot how much easier text suddenly becomes to read on screen
I don’t know how much of a resource hog it is, but quite frankly, I don’t care. Readability is that much better with it on, I’m willing to sacrifice performance for it.
